This semester I took a pattern making class. It was a class that I have been SO excited to take my whole time at BYUI, but I haven't had time until now. Basically we learned how to draft patterns to meet our own specific body shape. We learned to change these patterns to create different styles and shapes. From there we sewed the garment from the patterns we created and showed them off at the school's fashion show.
We first designed our dress in a half scale size to make sure everything worked out like we expected it would. We had to specifically alter each pattern piece to be the correct length and shape we wanted. It was also helpful to be able to practice the process of putting it all together. Once it was all designed and sewn we presented them in class and they were displayed in the school's Library for a few weeks. It looks a lot better on a small 3D mannequin than stapled to a bulletin board but It was still a cool experience. From there we began the full scale dress. Patterning mine took quite awhile, but what took the longest was cutting out the fabric. There are nearly 2 full circles of fabric in the skirt and it goes all the way to the ankle. SO. MUCH. FABRIC! I spent several long days working on this dress but I was thankfully able to finish it just in time for the fashion show! Dress DetailsBodice: This is a crossover v-neck top that is fully lined. The darts are eliminated to ease at the waistline and it is cinched with elastic in a serged casing. Sleeve: This piece has an enlarged babydoll sleeve that is cut down to a tulip shape. This was done to be able to add simple gathers at the shoulders. It also gave it a longer and and a looser shape. Skirt: The skirt has 6 pieces that were created by first closing the waistline darts and then creating a full shape with a reverse pegtop technique. The skirt is ankle length and is a true wrap that is connected to the bodice piece. The skirt is closed by utilizing the tie pieces. There are nearly 2 full circles of fabric which makes it very flowy and great for spinning. Other: Waist tie detail, and inside ribbon tie closure Fashion ShowI honestly thought that my whole pattern making class did an amazing job! Everyone's personality came out through the things that they made which is so fun to see. The catering classes on campus did a nice job with the food. The outdoor venue was something really fun and different from the previous fashion shows. Countless hours spent on this whole event and on all the clothing items presented. It was fun because they collaborated with the hair school in town so we all got our hair and make up done for the show which was a treat! The department had professional videographers come, so I will share the link to the youtube video when it is done. So glad to have bee able to be a part of this great event in my last semester of college!
