I think one reason I love to craft so much is that I see it as a problem solving challenge. I look at something that and think to myself, "I wonder how I would make that..." Then I if I want it bad enough, I convince myself to figure it out. For example. I have REAAAALLLLLYYYYY been wanting to get one of those vintage looking letter boards I have seen all over Instagram. They are so cute and provide a fun way to express yourself. Problem is- they are pretty pricy. So this is where my creativity kicks in. Could I just make one? Well, would you believe that what the leading brands sell for $65 I made for just $42? It really isn't about the money I spent, but I'm happy to have learned to make something new that I love! This is the breakdown of what it cost me to make:
The cool part about making your own things is that no one else will have exactly what you have! My letter board will be a little different then the rest but works just as well. I personally love the antiqued white frame and the grey felt background is not that common. They usually come in black or white. The process to make them was simple but a little time consuming. First you create a square like frame (mine was 12X12) to glue the rest of the wood dowels to. Then you hot glue them at consistent distance, but close enough so the felt will stay in. Do this all along the frame you have created. Once all the wooden planks are in place begin to tuck the felt into the slots tightly- I did this with a skinny art ruler. Once all the felt is tightly tucked into place, trim the edges of your felt around the small frame you have created and place the whole piece into the painted frame you have purchased. depending on the depth left in the frame you may need to hot glue the back onto the final product so that it fits. Then add your catchy words! It really is not too difficult of a process, but just takes awhile.
Word to the wise though- Use squared dowels, I did this originally with rounded dowels because they were cheeper, but it didn't look the same and didn't hold the letters as well. When I remade it with the squared balsa wood I was MUCH happier with the result! *I am not currently offering this in my shop, but am simply sharing as a DIY option for those interested. Happy crafting!
