About two weeks before moving back to Rexburg I decided to offer a crazy good deal on some paintings so that I could gain some experience and also to keep a little busy. While I wasn't making much, I was hoping to be able to save a little to put towards a new camera.
It was such a great experience honestly. There are some really great people out there that support small businesses. I was embraced with so many orders, I honestly only expected to do maybe 4 of them. If nothing more; the chance to make, sell, package and ship this amount of paintings taught me so much. It was a lot of work, I seriously put my heart into each one that I did.
If I were to do something like this again I would only allow for a limited amount of spots to be filled. I will also charge more because I realized that I can. People actually appreciate custom artwork and are willing to support the artist. Realizing this really boosted my confidence that my skills are valued. I've been thinking about offering some christmas paintings that could be used as gifts or on Christmas Cards.
I also learned about working with the customer to create what they want. Several wanted digital copies so that they could print them on their own. Which presented a challenge because I really do not want to be a "print" artist. So I decided to create and ship original paintings and then offer a "digital copy" for a small fee. It was a great solution for me because I scan and edit all of my paintings on my own anyway.
I also was able to experiment with packaging. Each painting was tied with colorful cake twine, and each envelope was sealed with wash tape. I hand-letted the names on each too. I also included a short thank you note and a business card. I really enjoyed the packaging process actually, it was probably even more fun than painting!
I seriously cannot thank you enough if you've ordered from me, or even just supported me in this creative journey. It has been so FUN!
